USA Swimming has announced the selection of its Scholastic All-America Team for 2007-08.

The selection criteria for first time applicants is much tougher starting this year.  Previously, a swimmer only had to participate in a sectional swim meet event.  Now, they must achieve a Junior National Cut, which represents the fastest swim meet in the country for swimmers 18 and younger.

Five NCAC swimmers made the cut: Chapel Hill High's Wes Foltz, Jesse Mendes, Patrick Cox, Kerry McLaughlin and East Chapel Hill High's Luke Hoffer all received the honor.  This marks the third consecutive honor for Kerry and the second consecutive for Wes, Jesse, and Patrick.  The total of 5 for NCAC was third-most among clubs in North Carolina.
Nine-hundred and seventy-four athletes made the team this year, including 600 women and 374 men.  Sixty-eight percent of the successful applicants had a 4.0 GPA. Fifteen percent of the athletes made the list for the third time in their careers.
Criteria for selection to the Scholastic All-America Team include the following:
Must have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade
Must be a USA Swimming member athlete
Must have participated in an individual event that met the Junior National Bonus Time Standard during the qualifying period of July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.
Must have achieved a 3.5 GPA

WELL DONE SWIMMERS!

Recommendations

Mike Hoffer, owner of Carolina Closets Plus and information provider for this page, has been involved in competitive year around USA swimming for over 14 years.  "My recommendation for a competitive swimmer in Chapel Hill is North Carolina Aquatic Club.  NCAC offer the best facilities in the Chapel Hill/Durham area.  NCAC trains in the Koury Natatorium on the UNC campus.  We have groups starting as young as six years old going all the way to the elite high school group who are preparing for swimming in college."
